Tips for first time travellers to the India

At the Monuments there are separate lines for foreigners. At most places there are different prices for foreigners even if there are not different lines.

In general, cash is better than traveller’s checks.Cash can be easier and quicker to exchange and command a higher rate or the commission can be lower. In some places, the larger the denomination of bills, the better the exchange rate. Many merchants will take dollars and their rate of exchange can be higher than the "official" rate. and in India normally safe with cash.

You never get better exchange price on airport always exchange your currency in market or bank to get better price.

Best is , carry toilet paper with you at all times. There are no guarantees that it will be in any bathroom in India specially on the way when you are going one place to other city.

Refer to your guide book on the existence of any black market for currency exchange and whether to or how to use it. Some countries are more tolerant of black markets than others.

Unless you have an audience with the head of state, leave all jewellery (and engagement ring) at home.

ALWAYS keep your passport, plane ticket, money and camera with you.

Too many people try to cram too much into a visit to India. Don’t be one of them. See in gone place slowly is so much more rewarding than seeing many places in a flash. You’ll be less stressed, gain a deeper understanding of where you are and have more time to build relationships with the people you meet.

If something doesn't go right, smile and be persistent in what you want. Getting mad, yelling or fist pounding will only be met with resistance.

As soon as you arrive some place, arrange your way on to your next stop. Trains/planes/("first class") buses tend to get booked up in advance.

Travel agencies can usually get reservations for you as they book blocks of seats well in advance.

Arrive early and get aboard early any bus/train/plane etc. They can be oversold and/or fill up in a hurry.

Avoid tap water, and any food that may have been washed in it, at all times. No ice, no salads and no fruit you haven’t just peeled yourself. Always buy packed water bottle before to paycheck properly it is packed water by famous company or not.

Many travelers go veggie whilst in India. It’s not a bad idea. A dodgy bit of meat will do you a lot more harm than slightly under cooked vegetables. Plus, many Indians are vegetarian, so there’s a fabulous choice of vegetarian food. If you do eat meat, make sure it’s well cooked. If in doubt, eat at a place that’s packed with locals. And after your dinner best is drink small alcohol.

Toilets are notoriously bad in India, but they don’t have to be health hazards.Consider using the left-hand-and-water-jug method preferred by many locals (it is, after all, so much more hygienic than using dry paper), but don’t forget to carry soap with you so you can wash your hands properly afterwards.

When traveling by regular bus, try to get seated close to the front as they will keep packing people in until there is no room left inside. Additional people then hang on the outside and climb on the roof, when travelling in a ordinary bus.

Always settle on a fare before climbing into an un-metered taxi. If metered, make sure the driver will go by the meter or decide on a price. Make sure the price includes everyone in your party. In some countries, the meters can't be readjusted as fast as the rate of inflation so the fare may be the meter price plus X%. Check your guide book or ask someone if the driver won't go by the meter. Rates are often higher in the middle of the night and between an airport and town.

When you step off the bus or whatever in a new town and need a place to stay, and some kids come up and offer to show you a place, go ahead and use them. You can always take a look and say no. They are just trying to drum up business for some place and/or a commission for themselves.

When asking directions to some place, ask several people not only person, and keep asking as you go. Because normally in India no body want say these word “Sorry I not know this “so ask some people.

Use a travel alarm clock to wake you up in time for that early morning bus/train/plane. Medicines of all kinds are usually available in local pharmacies with no prescription necessary. Check expiration dates.
